North Dakota Week kick-off – fun travel destinations and events

Peace Tower, Peace Garden

Last summer – when I lost my home and most of my belongings because of flood – I decided to hit the road (I had to – no hotel rooms available in Minot!).

Places I saw and heartily recommend

State Capital, Bismarck

State Capital

Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site– house and grounds in downtown Bismarck. Self-guided.

North Dakota Heritage Center – This museum is on the state capital grounds – from dinosaurs to now. Excellent. Great book store.

Lewis and Clark Riverboat – I didn’t actually get to this but I wanted to – it was closed because of flood.

Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park – Where General Custer lived before his last stand. Guided tour through Custer’s house, self-guided through the barracks. They have a wonderful book store, too.

North Dakota VA Cemetery – Just outside Fort Lincoln.

See this link for Rugby. It’s the Geographic Center of North America. When you find the marker for the Geographic Center, go to the adjacent diner – must eat!

At Prairie Village

Prairie Village Museum – Huge. I could have spent days in this village.

International Peace Garden– A must see. Have proper identification as you will have a U.S./Canada border-crossing stop.

The Peace Garden is also home to the International Music Camp (you can see my blog post about the Music Camp here).

Happening in Minot

North Dakota State Fair  (coming back this year!)

Norsk Høstfest
